St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, a remarkable mystic and Carmelite nun, dedicated her life to deepening her union with God and inspiring others through her profound spiritual insights.
About St. Elizabeth of the Trinity
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, born on July 18, 1880, in Avord, France, was a remarkable figure in the Catholic Church known for her profound spirituality and mystical insights. Born as Elizabeth Catez, she was the daughter of a French army officer and a devout mother. From a young age, Elizabeth displayed a deep inclination toward prayer and contemplation, often seeking solitude to connect with God.
Elizabeth’s childhood was marked by a loving family environment, but it was during her adolescence that she experienced a significant spiritual awakening. At the age of 15, she attended a retreat that profoundly impacted her, leading her to realize her calling to a life of prayer and dedication to God. This experience ignited a desire to enter the Carmelite Order, where she could pursue a life of solitude and contemplation.
In 1901, Elizabeth entered the Carmelite convent in Dijon, taking the name Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity. There, she immersed herself in the Carmelite traditions of prayer, silence, and community life. Her deep spirituality blossomed as she sought to cultivate a personal relationship with God. Elizabeth’s writings from this period reveal her profound insights into the mystery of God’s presence in the soul, emphasizing the importance of inner silence and the transformative power of divine love.
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity’s spirituality centered around the concept of the Trinity dwelling within each person. She believed that through prayer and contemplation, one could experience the presence of God in daily life. Her writings, including “The Prayer of the Presence of God” and “Letters to the Family,” reflect her mystical experiences and her desire to lead others toward a deeper relationship with God.
Despite her deep spirituality, Elizabeth faced personal trials, including health issues. She was diagnosed with Addison’s disease, which would ultimately lead to her early death. Even in suffering, she remained a source of strength and inspiration for her fellow sisters, encouraging them to embrace God’s love in every circumstance.
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity passed away on November 9, 1906, at the young age of 26. Her legacy lived on through her writings and the impact she had on those around her. In 1940, she was beatified by Pope Pius XII, and later, in 2016, she was canonized by Pope Francis, affirming her significance as a spiritual guide for many.
Today, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity is remembered not only for her mystical writings but also for her deep commitment to the presence of God in everyday life. Her life serves as a testament to the transformative power of prayer and the call to seek God in the silence of our hearts. Through her example, many are inspired to cultivate their own relationship with the Divine and to recognize the profound presence of the Trinity within them.

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Jesus, even though I fall at every moment, in trustful faith I shall pray to You to raise me up, and I know that You will forgive me, and will blot out everything with care. More than that: You will deliver me from my miseries, from everything that is an obstacle to Your divine action; and will draw all my powers to Yourself, and make them Your captive…Then I shall have passed completely into You and shall be able to say: It is no longer I that live, my Master lives in me. O Lord, the desire to listen to Your divine Word , the need to be silent is sometimes so strong that I wish not to know how to do anything else save to remain at Your feet like the Magdalen, in order to penetrate ever more deeply into that mystery of love which You came to reveal to us.
