St. Agatha Novena – Catholic Novena Prayer

St. Agatha, also known as Agatha of Sicily, is one of the most highly venerated virgin martyrs of the Catholic Church. It is believed that she was born around 231 in either Catania or Palermo, Sicily to a rich and noble family.

About St. Agatha

St. Agatha, venerated since at least the sixth century, was born and died a martyr in Sicily. According to legend, she came from a wealthy family and dedicated her life to God, rejecting suitors. One suitor, Quintian, had her arrested and tortured for her faith.

Despite his efforts, including imprisonment in a brothel, Agatha remained steadfast, claiming her freedom through Jesus. After enduring torture without medical care, she died, praying to God for protection and patience.

She is often depicted with her breasts on a plate due to a legend of her suffering that included having them cut off. This imagery may have led to a misconception that she carried loaves of bread. Agatha is also seen as a protector against fire, especially after her intercession during the eruption of Mount Etna, and is the patroness of bellmakers, possibly linked to the use of bells as fire alarms.
